Hi Dave. Whereabout in Auckland are you? Would be keen to catch up - maybe discuss the world cup over a few beers and biltong! Cheers~Carl

Dave,
in one of your earlier in the wharram.com forum you mentioned that you have used the Wharram wind vane steering system. Did you use it to sail to NZ? can you comment a little on the performance and behaviour? is it it a problem to reverse the boat with the trim tabs on the rudders?
Regards Björn

Right you are, Dave.
My family and I would love nothing more than to spend some soul time at sea. Not to mention, Tess and I both feel the education the boys get learning to build, sail, and navigate far outstrips the work force preparation they get at school. They are already talking about following Captain Ahab's track out from Nantucket to the Pacific - although we remind them we don't want our boat stove in. Take good care, Bob

Hi, being new to this forum (and also being a bit of a Luddite) I am getting used to the ropes......well, reason for reaching you is that I read somewher about your contact with Hans Klaar, and liked what you had to say about him. Am also a WBHS old boy, so thought it worthwhile to sound you out. I'm living in a shed on the backwaters of the Whangarei harbour, building boats, and have recently aquired an old Hinemoa that was moored in Auckland. Have brought the boat up here to get a bit of time on the water this summer.

cheers

Hi Dave, names mentioned of your wife and friends from Westville do not ring a bell........I am talking about the late 1960's.

Spent some more time in Durban building a boat ( something like a 30'ish foot version of the Klaar's Maria Jose) and sailed away in the mid 1980's. When in CT, I saw Ernst and Hans for the last time. Then got shipwrecked in Portugal the day after arriving there from England. Times sure have changed since those days when carrying a SA passport made one unwelcome in many parts of the world.

Great to be here in the summertime ! and good to hear your thoughts on how Hans will fare.

cheers
