Hi ian
Now that looks interesting! I recall that James had a 1000 square foot junk ketch rig on his Tehini when launched in 1969 but it was only effective when the boat was overloaded and she sailed to Spain and back. However when lightened and sailed in the round 1970 Britain race she would not sail to windward and James abandoned junk rig altogether.
gud day, there have been a lot of advances made with the junk rig since then. There r also quite a few Wharrams with junk rigs @ the moment, & the owners seem to be happy with the results, howeva they all have a mast in each hull, where as I am lookin 2 put a single unstayed mast in the middle.
thanx for the comments
Iain
There were also some junk rigged Tanes in the 70's- there was a French one I have a book about and also a chap in the UK that then crossed the Atlantic. Like you they were single masted. I'll look for the pictures I have and post them. I can't see any reason why it should not work and obviously racing yacht closewindedness is not really the point. I really hope you make it work!! I wonder if anyone else can comment on their experience sailing a Wharram with a conventional (ie mast in middle not bi-plane rig) Regards Martin
