Hi everyone!

We own a Tiki 38 that is equipped with two VETUS M2.13 diesel engines. 12 HP each. Engine and shaft and impeller can be lowered when used. The design is heavy, takes precious space on deck and until recently had no safe holding down of the shaft -> so we ran into some problems when the lowering ropes got tangled up in the propellers.

We would like to upgrade to 2 electrical motors, possibly outboard engines. I have been looking into epropulsion but am open to any better suggestions.

Has anybody tried to electrify a Tiki 38?

What are the pro and cons?

What are the experiences with an electrical engine?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Yann

Bonjour,

Salut
Olivier

I am at the moment building one and do that with elektrical motors. they are light and easy to handle althow the disign is not finished yet.

@Jozef: cool! What are you going to put? Inboard? Outboard What battery capacity? How are you going to charge the batteries?
Thanks
@Olivier: right! We have 810 Wp solar. We want to install a wind generator.
We will do long range sailing and use the motor for emergency and harbor maneuvers only.
@Jozef: I’d be keen to see the design and plans, please….😀

we have to do the complete design still but I am convinced of the possibility. I want to go for around 1200Wp of solar and regen of the motors or a separate generator because of the different needs of propeller. Battery will be offcourse LPF but the capacity is to be defined.
