Still in the planing stage of converting my tiki 30 to a biplane junk rig. Looking at two sails of 25m2 each. should the batten be short enough to miss the other mast? about 4m clearance between the centre line of each hull so if i keep the batten length at 3.5 it will determine the mast height? planing on a split jung rig sail plan ( from the JRA pages and Slieves plans)

We are speaking here of un-stayed masts buried in the hulls, carrying junk sails of moderate size. 4 sails of 15 m2 make 60 m2, while it needs 30 m2 sails on two masts, or the same on one mast. High aspect ratio, that means a square sail of 6 x 2.75m with 8 battens and 4 sheets, built very light. Reefing for heavy weather by binding 2 battens together, so stiffening the sail (reefing from the top).

Has anyone yet attempted to install a Junk rig on one of the larger Tikis in place of the Wingsails? I am not talking about installing them in the hulls, but on the decks in a schooner or ketch sailplan.

I would be interested to hear any performance reports on such a modification and see some pictures as well.

At the end of May we sailed to Southampton to join the Summer Junk Rig Association rally.
When sailing back we anchored in Aldernay harbour and we had the very good surprise the next morning to see a Wharram cat AORAI rigged as PHA with a junk rig on each hull motoring into the harbour.
There are Susi and Tom, a young German couple sailing from Berlin toward the Quebec via Spain, Madera, Canarias, Antillas....
Here is their website : http://www.aorai.eu
The tomorrow we sailed together toward Brest with a light east wind. They were slightly quicker but we kept them in sight all the day.
