Yanmar diesel Outboards

I am in the U.S. and looking at Yanmar D27 outboards to power my Tiki 38. There is a place in England that rebuilds them. I was looking at ordering one or 2. They aint cheap and expensive to ship. With shipping, maybe $7,000 or less. Is anyone interested in a group order? There are some videos on youtube, just type in Yanmar d27.

The motors were not imported to the us after 1996 and they stopped making them a couple years ago.

 

Here is what the company does to the motors:

 Our engines are built to order. They are usually  totally stripped. The crank shaft is sent away to be re-balanced and main bearing renewed, the pistons and conrods are renewed, valves ground and new guides if they are worn. It’s more of a re con than a re-build.

 The leg & gearbox is removed and checked. anything that needs doing is done. The gearboxes never seem to need much work. They are well over engineered for the kind of HP they put out.

 Then they are painted whatever color the customer wants, tested on a boat for 3-4hours of continuous use then shipped off.                                                    Price is $5600 for a non-tiller arm and $6700 with tiller arm.

Buyer make their own freight arrangements.

I noticed that the remanufacturing information is not visible on the black background. If you highlight it, you can read it. Basically its a total rebuild.
Is anyone interested in a group buy??? Save on shipping, etc. The cost is $5600 each.

And just as a follow up, i have seen some yanmar D27 on alibaba.com out of china from 2700 - 5500.usd.. Anyone know if these would be originals or chinese knock-offs?

Yes, it does seem very very steep!

There's a company in Newcstle, NSW that states on their web site that they specialise in Yanmar outboards the name of the company is Minnards

Hi. Im fortunate to own a 36hp Yanmar Outboard (purchased 6 months ago and great motor) and like many others around the world was trying to buy another. Beware of the the ones advertised in China and indonesia... the advertisers can be scams. A couple of months ago I was in contact ( via internet trade sites) with a "outboard agent" in Indonesia who was offering 4 yanmars at the same price as you quote. I thought that I had struck the Holt Grail of Yanmars! Before I committed any $$ I had a contact visit the "agents" "shop" address that he had given me... it turned out to be a cheap shoe shop!!. The "agent" had up until that point emailed me often and on the surface seemed legitimate by advertising other motors for sale as well. I alerted the trade sites ( Alibaba etc) to this rogues antics and the listing was taken off... however, I suspect that he may have re listed under another name.... Ask him for a photo of the serial numbers as I did.... (he refused) so Beware!.. Cheers

It's a tale of woe. My contact had a good supply of motors for rebuilding and I put a deposit down on 2. He went off on vacation last spring and his associate robbed him of a sizable amount of cash and his supply of motors (including mine). He was good enough to return my deposit and he is now out of the Diesel outboard business. This leaves me back looking for something to power my boat. This puts me back in the same situation as I was a year ago. I still do not know what I will use on my boat!

Hi Chuck.

I think I remember reading your story of woe on another website sometime ago on another site...it's good you got your $$ back but still looking for one after a year?.I thought that it may have just been me struggling to find another one at a reasonable price! The Yanmar that GREG F mentions that's for sale in Sydney NSW was sold a couple of months ago... I was looking at buying it but it worked out a bit expensive by the time it was landed in my country . In my six months of looking I've only managed to buy one... and even then I was only lucky enough to be "Johnny On The Spot" at the time. Do you have to use a diesel outboard on your boat?... other than finding a Yanmar there doesn't seem to be any other choice for diesel that I know of? I can't seem to find another choice.. or is there?..

The diesel outboards are very durable and best for motoring- two motors like this powered a 35' multihull across the Pacific (only 385 gallons were used in the 2,250 mile leg to Hawaii). I looked at long shafts, E-pods, Gasolene outboards, Sonic drives, and big assed oars! The diesels seemed the best for me. The only problem is the availability. I know of only 3 D36's that sold in the U.S. last year. I missed them because I was already commited to the twin D27's (before they were stolen). I'll keep looking, I can always go gas powered Yamahas. My boat is not yet finished, so I have time. The ideal model for me is a Yanmar D27 A X UL E. I have not seen any other brand of diesel outboard. New ones cost way too much and they no longer manufacture them.

Hi chuck,

Sounds like you had a bit of a nightmare... glad you got the deposit back tho..
You have certainly piqued my interest with these motors, they sound like an ideal solution to the propulsion questions of outboard / diesel / longtail / hydraulic, shame they are so damn hard to find at a reasonable cost. I have seen one or two advertised but at around 7-8000 euro they are too expensive for me at the moment as i am starting the complete renovation of tiki 46 #19, and buying motors for 8000 euro is out of the question until i am much further along and i have a better idea of what my total renovation cost are going to be.

I am thinking that i would be happy with one D27 for passage-making and then keep one of the 30hp yamaha 2 strokes just for manoeuvring, Do you think that this would be sufficient for a tiki 46 in regards to power?
