Wharram Builders and Friends

Does anyone have experience of Tiki 26's real building time?

My friend built the Tiki 21 and his building time was double compared to the Wharram's estimate. In his case Wharram's estimate was not real even though he was familiar with woodwork and he equipped his boat very reasonable way .

those building estimates as well as some of the epoxy amounts are shall we say optimistic.many people have commented on the dislocation of time of build to wharrams estimates, but they are estimates after all.

cheers paul.

This is how it's what I thought, thanks Paul.

Perhaps with excellent building shed, excellent tools, and a builder  experienced with epoxy and the stitch and glue or West System of boat building, then maybe the building time estimate would work out to complete only the work detailed in the plans with no changes. (We discovered that changes to the plans are a huge time waster)  But that estimate would not include paint and other finish work and it would not include anything more than the actual plans such as electrics, electronics, plumbing, etc.  Nev and I worked together and built Peace IV (Tiki 46) in 3.5 yesrs of  full time + building over a  five year period.  We had many stoppages due to health, weather, and other difficulties.  We installed the usual electrics and electronics and then crossed the Atlantic immediately.

Nev had built boats before but never used epoxy.  I had to learn to use a screw driver properly, never got good with saws, and just concentrated on epoxy bonding, painting, filleting, and fibreglassing.  Our building shed was adequate but dark and drafty and we only had it for half the time we built.  After that, we built outside.   Hope this helps.
