A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts

hi,

some friends are bulding a fiberglass catamaran in a very closed room. they want to ventilate with an extractor fan, but have doubt of where to put it (higher? lower? in medium height?)

don't know whether the evaporated styrene weights more or less than air.

any comment?

thanks

I think higher is better, use doble mask when working.

I never lay up in an enclosed space. During laminating time I keep the substrate warm and the workshop ventilated, as soon as the pot life ends I set the climate seal off the area and walk away as there is nothing more that can be done for the next 24hrs anyway. Sometimes I take a small off cut "control piece" with me to see all is curing ok.

Styrene also attacks the eyes and every open pore exposed, If you can smell it, it's getting to you, prolonged exposure will damage the nervous system. I'd advise Full face masks, Tyvek disposable suits and barrier cream, be prepared to get sweaty, wear light cotton cloths underneath. You have lots of styrene and sweat induced nappy rash to look forward to!

thank you very much for all replies!
