Reefing Ties

I'm about to rig my Tiki 21. The sail has reefing grommets, but they are empty. 

Can anyone tell my the right type of cord to fit here, and how long does it need to be. Also, I assume I tie and overhand knot either side?

Here's a shot of my mainsail while I was setting up the reefing:

Overhand knots will work; here the lines are long prior to trimming them a bit. I would actually put the reefs in before you cut the lines to size. Light, strong cord; they only  have to hold the bunched/reefed sail material.
