A Photo & Discussion Forum for Wharram Design Enthusiasts
One of the world's only aluminium-hulled Narai Mk4s. Beams rebuilt. Victron solar. Fully equipped. Taxes paid. Sail away now.
THE BOAT:
Built in 1996 in South Africa to James Wharram's Narai Mk4 plans, Stray is a rare, marine-grade aluminium bluewater catamaran — an uncommon specification for a Wharram design, chosen for its longevity, impact resistance, and corrosion resilience in tropical waters. Where most Wharrams are ply/epoxy, aluminium construction means no osmosis, no delamination, and a hull that will outlast almost anything else in her class.
She has earned her miles honestly: from the Cape of Good Hope to Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and across the Pacific to French Polynesia, where she currently sits in Phaeton, Tahiti-iti — one of the finest jumping-off points in the Pacific cruising world, next to haul-out facilities, fuel, hardware, provisioning and a marina.
KEY UPGRADES (2022–2024): All four crossbeams have been replaced with new aluminium beams, including the mast beam (2023) and main structural beam. This is the most critical structural work on any Wharram — it has been done, with photographic documentation available. New Victron house batteries (4 x 220Ah), new Victron SmartSolar MPPT 85A charger, 5 x 100W solar panels, new Dometic fridge, new GPS/fishfinder/depth sounder, new handheld GPS, new starter battery, new deck grip aft, recently repainted decks, centre cabin and cockpit interior.
SPECIFICATIONS:
ACCOMMODATION: Sleeps 6 comfortably — king berth in centre cabin (converts to 2 singles), 4 double berths (2 per hull). New foam, skylights and curtains in centre cabin. Standing headroom 1.98m in hulls, 2.5m under main dodge. Toilet and 20L holding tank in separate aft cabin. 500L water in 4 tanks. Galley and sink in port hull. Navigation station in starboard hull.
