I wanted wider beams and wider deck and came very close to buying a Seawind 24!  But decided I couldn't part with the Hinemoa, which I think is a better looking boat.

So now I plan to make some modifications including wider beams, solid deck and wing sail.  I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has made similar mods, especially widening the beams.

I've obtained plans from Wharram for these changes which suggest using the Tiki style beams but wanted to consider other options for the beams to save time.  I've read of others who have used aluminium tube, aluminium square, and mast sections.  If you have any experience with using these materials I'd be very interested to know sizes, etc. Any advice greatly appreciated.

I see the tags of your post: Hinemoa, beams, modifications. I think beams is one aspect of the boat, need a lot care about mods. You can use a Tiki 26 or 21 beams, its easy to do, two weeks you do two T21 beams. I think the best is do Tiki 21 beams a little bigger. If you wanna I have the sizes in home...contact-me

Thanks, Rogerio

Yes I would like to see the sizes for bigger T21 beams. Are you building a T21? I like the look of the Tiki beams but was put off by the high cost of marine ply in Western Australia where I live. I thought aluminium would be cheaper and quicker.  Thanks again, Dan

No I'm build one Tiki 30, but I have tiki 21 and 26 plans. Have one tiki 21 with aluminium beans, you see?

My Tiki 21 has standard dimension beams in welded alu - see my pictures. You would want to make sure that the welding is done by a pro.

I widen my Hinemoa, SeaLark, to average the difference between the T21 and T26.  I recycled a round section mast from a Tiki to form the beams and reduced the number of beams to 2 main beams with netting beams at bow and stern and a light weight half width beam to support a solid deck in front of a the mast which was a wing sail.  It all worked very well.  I did a write up for Sea People shortly after (about 2004 I think).

Thanks, Roger

This is another interesting way to do the beams. I enjoyed your pictures, some nice sailing around San Francisco Bay.  Cheers, Dan

I am currently building an Hinemoa and have not yet made my mind up about the beams, I would like to read Robert's article but have had no luck finding it, can you let me know which issue it was in. Thanks Barrie.

Hi Barrie,

The article is in issue  no. 43 January, 2001. I will be interested to hear what you decide on the beams. You may find useful a publication from Wharram "Design Modification for Hinemoa" which shows  increased beam using Tiki style I beams. Regards, Dan

Hi Dan, still not decided on beams yet, but will need to make a decision next weekend before I fit the deck. have you checked out www.wharram.weebly.com latley, he has posted a pile of new pictures of his rebuilt Hinemoa ( Tuatara ) in New Zealand. he has made a fine job of using aluminium beams.

Hey there Dan,
Just to throw some thoughts out there for consideration. In 2011 I rebuilt a very sad Hinemoa, mast rotten, cross beams rotten, cabin tops rotten, in fact there were some very colorful, (bright orange, brown and white) fungi growing inside the hulls (six inch diameter fan fungi) a little rot in the upper portion of the forward stems and the keel shoes were riddled with worm holes. Anyway, I got in touch with the J.W. team for advice on widening the beam, the sail rig etc. ended up building wider tiki style beams. Needed to modify the mounting area from the bolting method to locator pads and lashing plates, a lot of nose following here as apparently the mod is quite rare. Also used the Tiki 21 sail/mast plan, sheathed the mast in 300 gsm double bias, very strong! I went with the wooden Tiki beams mostly because the wood feels warmer, to my mind, and is easier to modify and attach things to, blocks, cleats etc than aluminium is, I can also screw, glue and repair on any adventure but may not be able to weld the Allie. The Tiki rig has proved to be very efficient, no stalls through light air, slow tacks and she ghosts along very well in a light breeze, in the little time we had her on the water and in 20/25 knot gusts, measured, with all lines singing under tension her mood was always considered and polite, big smiles!
