I just heard the news about Hans being Jailed in South Africa (Full details in my latest post at http://www.thegledaproject.com
The story of the Klaar family and their voyaging is colourful to say the least and I've always considered Hans a bit of a hero. It's a shame that he's fallen from grace in this way and although he deserves punishment for his crime it strikes me that he will suffer more than most being confined to a cell.

they call him the new bernard moitessier http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Moitessier.... he has some of him and a lot of Henri de Monfried http://www.roadjunky.com/article/724/henri-de-monfreid-smuggler-and...

.... i call him my friend and i own him a lot.... saving me out of difficult situation.

people how meet him, will not see him in the way like a lot of newspapers and things get turned around easy...

one thing is sure, the world gets very small for this king of adventurer.

cheers hans

what a shame,i for one think he is an absolute legend for his abilities as a seaman, trader and alternative lifestyle exponent.but as far as the rape goes there is no excuse and he must do his time.i grew up in south africa and in the bad old days during conscription we had to gaurd some of the prisons in cape town, man let me tell you it was not a pleasant place, god forbid he becomes a victim of the crime he commited inside as that would probably lead to getting infected with aids.so very sad.

I would agree - very sad to hear of Hans situation.  He is a great character, very  intelligent, knowledgable on a huge range of subjects, speaks about five languages fluently and is a dependable friend.  There is no doubt of course that he is an excellent seaman.

I know little of his reported crime but  know that in court in many cases it is the most exerienced  lawyer who usually wins a case.

Hans and Isabelle,

I am the person who wrote the article about Hans for the Mail and Guardian in South Africa. I have known Hans since he was 14 years old, and as a fellow long term sailor, I tried to keep to the facts and not turn anything around. I was saddened but not surprised to see him extradited for rape. The court details for the case are available online if you care to search for them. Being a great sailor does not exempt Hans Klaar from following the law, or give him an excuse to hurt women.

Happy sailing.

...anyway, he is locked up now, some like it some not.... i think we should not wash other peoples laundry on a www page like this. the newspapers do this job.  i read your artical of course and this one from the court details too. but this all doesn't change me opinion about him. i am not saying that i think it is ok what they blaim him for.... anyway, lets talk about boats again. cheers hans

I thought you article was very well written.

And your name is beautiful.

iv’e known hans for the last 30 years, have sailed about 7000 miles with him, sailed with his father on maria jose and other boats,
we were the first to hear about what happend in durban in 96,this woman volantarily came out to his boat with him after meeting him in a club, they spent the night together that much is true, the rest i belive is the fantasy of a young girl who thought she had hit the jackpot, thinking she could blackmail hans for her own financial gain.
unfortunately hans in his innocence didn’t get proper legal council, beliveving in his innocence ,he thought it would blow over, unfortunately things got blown out of preportion by female actavists and felt the full force of the law at the time,he did the only thing he knew and sailed out of a bad situation.
i belive this is a gross miscarrige of justice.
dr martanique stillwell, possibly ive met you but don’t recall you,you seem to have a very large axe to grind, looking at your profile on the net, self publacism seems to be your aim, hans seems to be one of your vehicles.
having spent many months with hans on board various vessels,in the company of hans and my self and our respective girl friends, and later wives over a period of nearly 30 years.
i find your claims hard to belive even if you were immature at the time.

i see it the same way.... just spoke to hans sister and she confirmed it in some way.

As I understand things; Hans has many friends and comes from an essentially decent family background. With jail visits being a limited priviledge, I did not impose my presence when hearing that he was here in NZ......and at the time of hearing about his predicament he was soon to be moving to SA.

Anyway, the whole story did not add up..........excepting for the bit about the female student ending up playing sex games after a celebratory night on the town. It did not seem PC to disagree with Martinique Stillwell, but what is she doing here on this forum in the first place ??

my thoughts as well, her info is very well researched and fairly true, but put together with a very nasty slant.

one only has to look at wiki leaks to see the parrellels,of a sex smear campaign .

It's been fascinating to see how this thread has developed since I posted what I just thought was an interesting snippet of news (albeit sad). I and others have been concerned that this thread should not deteriorate into a discussion about the private and legal matters surrounding this case. That was never my intention and they could result in this thread being removed.

I do however think that some wider issues have been uncovered that warrant or even demand wider discussion and as such I will leave it open to comments but please think carefully about what you write. Thanks

I've posted my thoughts on the matter on my website this evening
