I am currently building a catamaran of my own design, I was of coarse inspired by Mr wharram, mr ,derking and clc canoes Hull # 1is coming together very nicely, the canoe ends are from mr wharrams designs hull body from mr dierking and hull bottom from clc canoes,it is 27ft total length 27inches wide at the hull top 22inches wide bottom My goal to have a cat for adventure sailing that 1 man can singlehand easy and get to the places that most can't. I am interested in crab claw sails and making this boat very versitile in sailing.I'm looking for advise on constructing crabclaw booms of a proper perportion for this boat I would love to work with bambo but this is not a possiablity  in washington state cost prohibitive.I am not yet sure witch would be better for the masts on the deck or in each hull bi plane style each has its own strengths and weaknesses .steering will be steering oars wharram  any advice welcome.Tony

My advice is to build a scale model and get it to self steer to windward with any rig, then try out any of the rigs you've mentioned.  I doubt anyone can predict how your self designed boat will sail without a lot more information.  CLC is only about a half hour from me, which of their boats did you use for the bottom plan.  It sounds like you might be using a flat bottom, You may need some sort of a keel or centerboard to get it to sail to windward.  Making a model allows experimentation and development without having to build several boats.  I have personal experience with big differences in sailing ability resulting from deviations from a stock plan.  A completely new design will need sorting out for sure.  I applaud your creativity and hope you can add pictures from time to time and report on progress.

Good luck with your endeavors mate,I admire your sense of adventure, pretty much what my tiki 26 will be the vehicle to voyage to other shores,at the moment i am looking at Madagascar when all the building and the rest  is done.To second Andy's thoughts on unproven design, this can be a costly and time consuming trap with the end  results not living up to expectations.I was thinking about a ccr on my boat eventually,I love the look of the things if nothing else.

Thanks for the advice guys I like the scale model idea right off I do have a slight V in the hull but I had always intended to use dagger boards and wharrams outside mounted rudders   I have always liked his ideas anyway alot of this is based on his work anyway combining the many ideas is the hard part different sizes and all The model will help many of these things.Tony

Ahoy Tony,

You might want to try some of the software available at Carlson Design.  It will help you make a model by converting a hull shape into flat panels.  You can also play around with hull shapes.  If you make something "generic" quickly, you can then try out all the rigs, mast positions, work out sail balance, etc.  There is also boatdesign.net which may have some forum topics that help.

Thanks again pointing me to places I might never run across  I find sometimes I just get lucky in some things I have found but its good to get some direction from those like minded. I will explore your suggestions soon. The cold weather soon to come so working on small inside things is soon upon me and scrounging for some materials, I would like to add to earlier posts no photos til spring sorry my  camra  suffered some neglect it was salvaged from my last boat and not got to fast enough, not like it was over used I don't do well with them I am an ex Berlin Brigade soldier from the late 70s we tended to be taught to be camra shy  and when I sail its somewhere safe but hard to get to during I should be catching this on film moment, the bad part of sailing alone, But my 1993 magellon gps and $300.00 vhf radio are in exellent condition.Tony

Hi - any drawings of what you are designing?

Sorry no I got the angles for the bow from pics I got the bottom from actual a paper pattern from a kayak I built years ago the middle is made by gleening some post and finding some general measurements all put together with a fairing stick to find the new edges.and a little card board destroyed after use to keep the landlord off my ass for the mess My brother was only glad I didn't start this in the living room, The land lord wouldn't let me put french doors on that side of the house so I had to wait until after my hernia operation before I started so it was warm enough outside but the porch we built did get a little crowded now she's under a tarp yes I'm a little resourse challenged at times, but I get it done. Tony
