Hi everybody,

I have just received my Hitia 17 building plans (#456) and I'm really excited to start building, but this is my first build, as total newbie in this world I first need to do a lot of research.

The plans recommends using West System but after reading a lot of really good reviews I'm thinking on using Raka resins.

Does anybody else here uses it?

Do you recommend the slow Raka 350 Non-Blushing Hardener?

Can I leave the pumps on the epoxy containers over a longer period of time or should I remove the pumps and close the containers after each use?

I have not been able to find a thread dealing specifically with two component paints - likes, dislikes, pros, cons, brands, etc. When I built my Tiki 21 I used the best exterior acrylic house paint that I sold in own hardware store for above waterline and it lasted quite well. This time around, even though the cost will be considerably higher, I want to reduce maintenance and thus I am leaning towards a two component paint. What advice do other builder's have? What brands are preferred? Are some easier/safer to work with than others? Has anyone had experience with System3? What about bottom coatings? I will be sailing in fresh water, moored for most of the summer but trailering at times.
non skid paint tipstag:wharrambuilders.ning.com,2017-03-31:2195841:Topic:1501692017-03-31T19:48:10.836ZBrett Parkerhttp://wharrambuilders.ning.com/profile/BrettParker

Hello boatbuilders,

I am going to coat the interior of the hull panels of my Melanesia. Do you recommend using the wet on wet technique (when the previous coat is sticky, apply the next one)? That way I would have a primary bonding which is supposed to be stronger, right?

However, in the West System user manual and in some places I have read that the first coat should be left to cure, sanded and then apply the next coats.

What would you recommend?

Thanks!

Hi everyone!

Building the Melanesia is turning out to be a bit more complicated than I thought.. since it is the first time I build a boat.

I coated the interior of the pannels with 3 layers of epoxy. I haven't used the West Systems Epoxy but another one I found a bit cheaper.

I might have messed up a bit on the resin-hardener ratio because after 4 days some parts are still a bit sticky... and it is about 25 to 30 degrees celsius (77 to 86 fahrenheit) here in Barcelona…

I was thinking it would give the hull some resistance, in case it hits a rock on the beach or something, especially since I am using 5mm plywood instead of 6mm.
